2022 Collection
Wine Maker Comments:
This blend highlights all three of the Rhône varieties grown on the Sea Shell Estate. It features the delicate, expressive fruit of its Grenache (grown on the property's lower, west-facing slopes), the chewy texture and earthiness of its Mourvèdre (grown on that same west-facing slope), and the savory aromatics and depth of its Syrah (grown on its upper limestone rich slopes).
Vinification:
The Syrah was the first red to be picked for the 2022 vintage. The Syrah was picked on August 31st, the Grenache came about a month later on October 4th, and the Mourvèdre was on October 14th. For each lot, the fruit was hand sorted, destemmed, and lightly crushed into separate open-top fermenters. The must was then inoculated with yeast and fermented at a target temperature of 90 degrees F and punched down twice daily until the end of fermentation. The wine was then pressed off the skins into tanks to settle for a few days. We then racked off the settled-out sediment and pumped the wine into French oak barrels. All three lots went through malolactic fermentation and lived for 18 months in barrel. The blend was created and mixed before bottling.
